The Eldest Child Lies Awake is a poetry collection that explores grief, longing, illness, love and inheritance, tracing the emotional afterlife of what childhood, family and loss leave behind.
Dark, intimate and sharply lyrical, Aleyna Odabas writes with honesty and intensity, addressing readers unafraid of tenderness, haunted by memory and the beauty that can still be found in brokenness. The result is an intimate and unguarded exploration of what it means to endure, to remember and to keep speaking from pain.

Born in Halifax, UK, to an English mother and a Turkish father, Aleyna Odabas found herself moving between cities and countries constantly as a child, never able to truly settle and find herself at home. In 2023 she made the decision to leave all she knew behind and move to Thailand, hoping it would fix something inside her that she believed had been broken. For a while, the sunshine definitely worked a little magic. Unfortunately, the sun doesn’t stay forever.
It must be mentioned that people were lost along the way, people that deserved more time. Aleyna believes that poetry can bring them back.
