In SHORT STORIES and a scattering of poems, Martin Willoughby-Thomas takes us on an extraordinary journey through lives and landscapes shaped by irony, tenderness, and self-discovery.
Each story — at times moving, at times surreal, always deeply human — reveals the author’s sharp and compassionate eye on the world: a lawyer seeking renewal in Africa, a child unjustly accused at school, a man pursued by a hippopotamus turned “local council officer.”
With lucid, cinematic prose, Willoughby-Thomas moves seamlessly from laughter to reflection, from the waters of the Niger River to the deserts of the soul.
A mosaic of emotion and humanity, this collection invites readers to see life from unexpected angles and to rediscover wonder in the everyday.
Martin Willoughby-Thomas was born in England and migrated to Australia during childhood. Over the course of a diverse and dynamic career, he has worked in economic research, theatre, trade union advocacy, and law—and even spent a brief period involved in fusion energy research in the United Kingdom.
A lifelong traveller and keen observer of the human condition, Martin has explored more than one hundred countries, often with nothing more than a backpack and an open mind. His journeys have fostered a deep affection for Africa and an enduring admiration for the richness and complexity of Indian culture.
Writing has been a constant companion throughout his life. He has written for pleasure for many years, producing plays, scripts, travel essays, short stories, and the occasional poem. His work is known for its wit and eccentricity, often blending humour with thoughtful reflections on life’s deeper themes.
